The city, already populated in Roman times, is situated on one of the important roads of Central Europe connecting Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. The city lies at the confluence  of the rivers Danube, Rába, and Rábca, which create smaller and bigger islands with romantic bars and restaurants, narrow streets and a mixture of historic buildings.

Visitors will find side by side the remains of fortresses, episcopal and monastic churches, buildings in Gothic and Baroque style, and a Neoclassical heritage. It is a city where the pleasing harmony of different architectural styles and superb structures, cafes, gastronomy and culture are combined with the legendary Hungarian hospitality, blending into an unforgettable experience for visitors. Győr is also the home of “szóda” – carbonated water, invented by the local benedictine monk Ányos Jedlik, who also invented the dynamo preceding Faraday by some years.
